11 July was World Population Day. This event was
observed in all parts of the world. The day provided a much needed point of reflection for
a planet where population programs become more and more vital to its continued survival.
Asia witnessed several parliamentarian initiatives to mark the occasion.
In Thailand,
Sen. Prof. Dr. Prasop Ratanakorn, Secretary General of AFPPD and Chairman of the Senate
Committee on Public Health, in a statement to fellow parliamentarians: gave special
emphasis on small family and womens education initiatives.
- In India, both the
President and the Prime Minister released statements urging the need for family planning.
K.R. Narayanan, President of India, specifically asked elected representatives, up to the
Panchayat level, to work with renewed vigor, commitment and dedication to the aim of
population stabilization. In this spirit, a pledge was signed by the Minister and elected
representatives.
- In Vietnam, the
Vietnamese Association of Parliamentarians for Population and Development (VAPPD) reminded
its members about the economic aspects of population growth and the need for population
planning and development.
