AFPPD Chairman at United Nations

Mr. Yoshio Yatsu, MP Japan and Chairman of AFPPD addressed U.N. Commission on Popoulation and Development on 6th April and expressed the need for enhanced Political Committment for HIV/AIDS and linkage with reproductive Health. He also mentioned about the establishment of Japan Trust Fund to support parliamentarians activities worldwide. He hosted a lunch for AFPPD partner organization. He met Dr. Mrs. Obeid, Executive Director of UNFPA.

Asia Pacific Alliance on ICPD on the move

The APA for ICPD a unique platform of Overseas Donar Agencies (ODA's) foundations and national and regional NGO working on resources for ICPD met in Bangkok on April 25th to 28th. Mr. Kim Hak-Su Executive Secretary UNESCAP opened the meeting which was also addressed by Mr. Stan Berrstein policy adviser of Millinuim Project. It was attended by ODA representative from USA, Japan, Korea, Australia, Newzland and Canada and Foundation from USA including MS. Sono Aibe from Packard foundation and Ms. Lois Bradshaw of USAID and International and Regional NGO's including AFPPD. The meeting explored ways to enhance rsource base for ICPD.

ASEAN Parliamentarian Seminar: The Spread of Avian Influenza

The Senate Standing Committee on Public Health in cooperation with Ministry of Public Health, Thailand, National Assembly of Thailand and AFPPD organized the Asian Parliamentarian Seminar on the spread of Avian Influenza from April 19th to April 20th in UNCC Bangkok. This Seminar brought together 40 members of Parliamentarians around the region and discussed ways to prevent spread of Avian Influenza and related policy.

Asian Parliamentarian meet on Tsunami

On 29th and 30th April more than 40 member of parliament and Asia Pacific and Central Asia assembled in Phnom Penh, Cambodia for APDA (Asian Population and Development Association) and AFPPD seminar to review the situation of Tsunami and the work done to provide assistance for the rehabilitation including Health and Reproductive Health area. The Seminar was addressed by Mr. Yoshio Yatsu Chairman of AFPPD and Ms. Imelda Henkin Deputy Executive Director of UNFPA and other experts.

Japanese Parliamentarians on Tsunami

Following to the Combodia seminar Mr. Shin Sakuri, Ms. Kayoko Shimmizu and Mr. Hiroyuki Nagahama Parliamentarian from Japan visited Phuket, its nearby areas and Bangkok to seek first hand knowledge of the Tsunami related relief work. They were briefed by Dr. Giridhar Giri UNFPA/CST and met Parliamentarians of Thailand.

Non-Aligned women minister meet

Non-aligned minister met in Kuala Lumpur from 7th to 10th May to discuss advancement of women, women and health, voilence againist women and women in decision making. AFPPD was represented by Malaysian Parliamentarians.

Advocacy to face emerging challenges

Population and RH activities from around the world met in London on 21st and 22nd April to discuss advocacy issue for ICPD and the emerging challenges. The meeting convened by IPPF was addressed by Dr. Steven Sinding Director General of IPPF and Ms. Valerie DeFillipo of IPPF, Mr. Shiv Khare of AFPPD made a presentation on Ground realities of Population and Development and RSH issues in Asia.
