JULY 2004Thailand World Population Day Takes International FlavorThe World Population Day in Thailand on 11 July was observed at the venue of the 15 th International AIDS Conference at IMPACT Convention Center with International High-Level guest speakers. Dr. Thoraya Obaid, Executive Director of UNPA, Dr. Steve Sinding, Director General of IPPF London and Dr. Nafis Sadik former Executive Director of UNFPA and current UN Secretary General envoy on HIV/AIDS for Asia and the Pacific. They spoke to a fully packed hall consisting of population activist from around the world and young people of Thailand. They narrated not only their experiences, but also answered questions. Ms. Barbara Lee, Member of Congress from USA also shared her experiences. The World Population Day was opened by H.E. Anutin Charnvirakul, Deputy Health Minister of Thailand and addressed by Dr. Thoraya Obaid. Mr. Shiv Khare, Executive Director of AFPPD was the moderator of the day. Senate President hosts lunch for Dr. Thoraya ObaidH.E. Mr. Suchon Chaleekure, President of the Thai Senate and AFPPD hosted a lunch reception at the Senate for Dr. Thoraya Obaid, Executive Director of UNPFA. A large number of Thai parliamentarians and Dr. Nafis Sadik former Executive Director of UNFPA and current UN Secretary General envoy, Dr. Steve Sinding, Director General of IPPF London, Ms. Barbara Lee Congresswoman of USA, and Ms. Jane Alisemera Babiha, MP (Uganda) and Ms. Amy Cohen, President of Population Action International, USA and her associates, officials of Planned Parenthood of America and may others attended. Women Ministers and Parliamentarians Conference in Canberra Pledge to Work for ICPD+10 Gender IssuesAFPPD organized the Second Women Ministers' and Parliamentarians' Conference in Canberra, Australia in the Parliament of Australia from 29-30 June 2004. It was attended by around 70 women parliamentarians and ministers with more than 100 participants, which consisted of NGOs, UN agencies, academics and others. Prominent resource persons and women activities addressed the sessions. A statement of commitment was adopted at the conference. The opening was addressed by Senator the Honourable Kay Patterson, Minister for Family and Community Services and Minister Assisting the Prime Minister on the Status of Women and addressed by Ms. Imelda Henkin, Deputy Executive Director of UNFPA. AFPPD at Global Health FundThe Global Health Fund for AIDS, Malaria and TB organized their International Stakeholders meeting. Parliamentarian groups such as AFPPD, Ms. Mary Henry, Senator from Ireland of International –European Forum (IFEPPD), Mr. Michel Guerry, Senator (France) from the PNoWB and Mr. Shiv Khare, Executive Director of AFPPD were present. It was a useful conference to enable the workers from the NGO field to openly interact with Global Fund on various aspects of its operations. International AIDS Conference talks about LeadershipThe 15 th International AIDS Conference in Bangkok opened on 11 July to run up to 16 th July, received 15,000 participants, including several members of parliament. An Asia-Pacific Health Ministers Conference was also held. UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan addressed both events. AFPPD and the Indonesian Forum of Parliamentarians are attending the conference.
