Central Asian Parliamentarians met in Bishkek
On 27-28 June, parliamentarians from Kyrgyzstan, Tajakistan and Kazakhstan met in Bishkek to discuss “Adolescent Reproductive and Sexual Health in Central Asia”. The Central Asian Parliamentarians Conference was organized by AFPPD with the Parliament of Kyrgyzstan and UNFPA. It openly discussed the problems faced by young people in the region. The Prime Minister, Health Minister, Education Minister and the Speaker of the Parliament addressed the conference along with UNFPA Regional representatives, Mr. Khalid Phillby and Dr. Malinee Sukavejworakit, Secretary General of AFPPD. Several national level follow-up are now being planned.
AFPPD at Global Fund Partnership Forum in Durban
Four parliamentarians from Vietnam, Indonesia, Mongolia and Korea were represented at the Global Health Fund Partnership Forum on 1-3 July at Durban, South Africa. The forum adopted several important recommendations on the grant making process of Global Health Fund and discussed HIV and AIDS situations.
Nepal has a new Committee
Nepal Parliament has been recently reconvened and has a new Parliamentary Committee on Population and Social Affairs under the chairmanship of Mr. Birodh Khatiwada MP, with 18 members including one woman member. Mr. Manohar Prasad Bhattarai's parliament staff is the secretary of the committee.
Young Decision Makers Conference
Helsinki will host Asia-Europe Young Decision Makers Conference including young parliamentarians on 7-8 September as part of the Asia-Europe Governmental Conference. Inter-Europe Forum on Population Development and AFPPD will arrange the participation of parliamentarians.
Parliamentarians at Toronto AIDS Conference
Several Asian countries are sending parliamentarians to Toronto AIDS Conference. Bangladesh, Pakistan and India had reported that their parliamentarians will attend. A special panel of parliamentarians will also be held.
Parliamentarian Conference on Environment in Malaysia and Korea
The AFPPD Malaysia in cooperation with the Government and the Parliament of Malaysia will conduct a two day parliament conference on “Environmental Degradation and Disaster Management Conference” at Penang, Malaysia on the 10th and 11th of August.
A similar conference of parliamentarians on environment will be organized by AFPPD affiliated Committee on Population and Environment (CPE) in the Korean Parliament from 1st to 4th of September in Seoul.
AFPPD at IPPF-ESEOR Regional Council Meeting
Executive Director, Mr. Shiv Khare, spoke at the IPPF-ESEOR Regional Council meeting in Chiang Mai on 28 July on “Advocacy with Parliamentarians by Family Planning Associations”. Dr. Raj Karim, the Regional Director, presented an impressive report of the region.
IEPFPD has UN ECOSOC Consultative Status
The Economic and Social Council of the United Nations (ECOSOC), at its Substantive Session of July 2006, decided to grant special consultative status to the Inter-European Parliamentary Forum on Population and Development (IEPFPD).
