Mari Simonen appointed as Deputy Executive Director, UNFPA
Mari Simonen, a national of Finland, has been appointed as the Deputy Executive Director, External Relations, United Nations Affairs and Management of the United Nations Population Fund. Earlier, she was the Director of UNFPA's Technical Support Division. Ms. Simonen has a long experience in Population, Reproductive Health and Development related issues. Before joining the United Nations in 1980, Ms. Simonen worked at the University of California, Berkeley.
Another Korean Prime Minister from AFPPD fold
Hon. Han Myeong Sook, current chair of Committee on Population and Environment (CPE) of the Korean Parliament (which is a member of AFPPD), has been named as a new Prime Minister of Korea replacing Mr. Hae Chan Lee, who was also the chair of CPE and AFPPD alumnus.
APDA Seminar
The Asian Population and Development Association (APDA) Tokyo's 22nd Annual Parliamentarians seminar with AFPPD on "Population in the Globalizing Society:Focus on Asia-Pacific" will be held on 23rd and 24th April 2006 in New Delhi, India. The 58th Executive Committee meeting of AFPPD will also be held at the same venue on 23rd April 2006.
AFPPD-IFAD Seminar on Poverty
International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) based in Rome and AFPPD will bring together 30 Parliamentarians in Hanoi, Vietnam on 5th and 6th April 2006. This will be an experiment of seminar cum study visits for the Parliamentarians. The seminar will be hosted by Vietnam Association of Parliamentarians on Population and Development (VAPPD) in cooperation with Globe Japan.
AFPPD, World Bank-CPA Cooperation
AFPPD, World Bank and CPA joined hands to organize a Regional Parliamentarians Seminar on Development. IMF, ADB and WTO also participated and so did some 40 Parliamentarians from Asia.
Jamaican Officials Briefed
10 Officers from Jamaica visited AFPPD on 8th March 2006 to get briefing on Parliamentarians involvement in HIV/AIDS prevention in Asia-Pacific.Those officials and NGO representatives were part of the training organized by Kasetsart University, Thailand.
Indonesian Forum President Visit
Mrs. Aisyah Hamid Baidlowi, M.P. Indonesia and President of Indonesian Forum of Parliamentarians on Population and Development (IFPPD) visited AFPPD to review the organization of the 8th General Assembly in Jakarta, Indonesia and its impact among Indonesian Parliamentarians and officials. Mrs. Baidlowi is a sister of Mr. Abdurrahman Wahid, former president of Indonesia. Discussion also took place on future strategies in relation to Population and Health Legislation and other programmes.
PLCPD Leadership with NGOs
Phillipinnes Legislative Committee on Population and Development (PLCPD) is emerging as a leader among NGOs in the Phillipines. This was evident from the 300 strong attendances of the Phillipinnes NGOs and donors at the National Conference on Population, Health and Environment organized by PLCPD and Population Reference Bureau (PRB) with others from 15th to 17th March 2006 in Cebu, Phillippines. AFPPD and UNFPA also attended the conference. Packard foundation organized donors meeting to further the concept of Population-Health-Environment (PHE) at the same venue, which was also attended by AFPPD.
