Mr. Shinzo Abe, AFPPD Alumnus, Elected as Japan's New Prime Minister

Tokyo, September 26:  Mr. Shinzo Abe, Chief Cabinet Secretary of Japan, was elected as Japan's new prime minister by the Parliament. He was a member of JPFP and a participant of the 1995 AFPPD-UNFPA’s International Parliamentarians Conference on Population and Social Development, organized at the Danish Parliament in conjunction with the UN World Summit on Social Development. His late father, Mr. Shintaro Abe, was a former Foreign Minister and a former Chairman of the Japan Parliamentarians Fedration for Population (JPFP).

In the new cabinet, there are several ministers who attended AFPPD events; namely Mr. Masatoshi Wakabayashi, Minister of Environment, attended the AFPPD General Assembly in China on 2002; and Mr. Toshikatu Matsuoka, Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fishery, attended an AFPPD meeting in Mongolia.       

Updates on International Parliamentarians’ Conference on ICPD

Ms. Hurumi Kodama, UNFPA-IERD Parliamentary/NGO Public Affairs Officer, visited Bangkok to review and finalize arrangements for the 2006 International Parliamentarians’ Conference on the Implementation of the ICPD Programme of Action (IPCI/ICPD), to be held on November 21-22 at the UN Conference Center in Bangkok. Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn of Thailand had kindly agreed to graciously preside over the opening ceremony of the conference which will be attended by about 200 parliamentarians and NGO officials around the world. Ministers from Australia, Bolivia, Cameroon, China, and Portugal had also agreed to address the conference. 

Parliamentarians’ Workshop in Seoul  

Seoul, September 1-3:  The Korean Parliamentary League on Children, Population and Environment (CPE), an AFPPD member, in collaboration with the Korean Parliament and Asia-Pacific Parliamentarians’ Conference on Environment and Development (APPCED), organized the 1st Parliamentarians’ Workshop: “MDGs and the International Development Cooperation in Asia-Pacific Region”. The workshop was addressed by the current and the former Prime Ministers of South Korea, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade who is a candidate for the UN Secretary-General post, the Minister of Environment and the Speaker of the Parliament. It was also addressed by Mr. Shiv Khare, AFPPD Executive Director, who presented the role of parliamentarians in population, health and environment issues, and Mr. Rajendra Shende of UNEP.

AFPPD's Young Parliamentarians at the ASEM, Finland

Helsinki, September 7-8:  On the sideline of the Asia-Europe Summit (ASEM), the Young Decision Makers Conference was organized by the Family Federation of Finland, in cooperation with the Inter-European Parliamentary Forum on Population and Development (IEPFPD). AFPPD sponsored parliamentarians below 35 years of age to attend the conference; namely Ms. Po Kuan Fong MP of Malaysia, Mr. Mohammad Shamin Kaiser MP of Bangladesh, Rep. Darlene Magnolia Antonino-Custodio of the Philippines and Ms. Janista Lewchalermvongse, Chat Thai Party Deputy Secretary-General. Around 40 young parliamentarians and decision-makers from Asia and Europe attended the conference.

JBIC and Civil Society

Bangkok, September 11:  Professor Kuzumi Goto, from the University of Hosei in Japan, visited AFPPD Secretariat with Ms. Yupin Tamratnangul, JBIC Project Officer,to discuss about the prospects on the civil society engagement in JBIC’s work.

APA-PAI Regional Advocacy Training and Strategic Workshop

Chiang Mai, September 18-22:  Asia-Pacific Alliance for ICPD (APA) and Population Action International (PAI), with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and World Bank, organized a regional advocacy training, and strategic workshop specifically focusing on sexual and reproductive health and advocacy.

It was attended by NGO representatives from Asia and the Pacific and was conducted by Ms. Eileen Kelly, APA Regional Coordinator, and Ms. Susan Ehlers, PAI Senior Associate for International Advocacy.

Central Asian Parliamentarians’ Meeting on HIV/AIDS

Bishkek, September 25:  Parliamentary Conference on the HIV Epidemic in Central Asian and East European countries took place, entitled “Legislative Measures on Fighting Against HIV, Priorities of Inter-Regional Cooperation”. It was attended by the parliamentarians from Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. It discussed the problems of prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS and drug addiction, social protection, and support for people with HIV/AIDS and their family members.    

APDA Parliamentarian Seminar on Disaster Management

Asian Population and Development Association (APDA), Japan organized a regional parliamentarians’ seminar in Tokyo and study visit to Nigata, Japan, on disaster management and reconstruction towards sustainable development through the improvement of reproductive health and community capacity building. This was a follow-up to the Japanese parliamentarians’ study visits to Indonesia and Sri Lanka on the tsunami. Forty parliamentarians and others from Asian countries attended the seminar and study visit.

New AFPPD Vice-Chairperson from Fiji

Hon. Pita K. Nacuva, new Speaker of the Fiji Parliament, became the Vice-Chairperson of AFPPD replacing Hon. Ratu Epeli Nailatikau who had been named as the Ambassador of Fiji to UK.

World Bank Institute Women Parliamentarians’ Meeting

The World Bank Institute will organize a seminar on women’s leadership in Helsinki on October 1-4. Dr. Malinee Sukavejworakit MP, AFPPD Secretary-General, and Dr. Tarnthong Thongswasdi MP will represent AFPPD on the seminar.    

OECD Parliamentarians’ Meeting

OECD will organize a high-level parliamentary seminar on growth and jobs in Paris on October 5.
