Parliamentarians on Enhanced National Budgets
for ICPD
Thailand – Over 40
participants, including parliamentarians, from
Emerging Economy Countries of Asia assembled in
Chiang Mai, Thailand on 20-21 August 2011 to
discuss their role in economies that are
becoming donors or able to self support ICPD
Programme of Action. Although the five
countries, namely India, Indonesia, Malaysia,
Thailand, and the Philippines, are still
recipients of foreign aid, parliamentarians of
these countries also felt that their government
can allocate more funds for population,
reproductive health, family planning, and
related issues in their national budget.
The consultation was
organized by AFPPD and the European
Parliamentary Forum on Population and
Development (EPF).

Parliamentarians at ICAAP 10 in Busan
Republic of Korea –
“Political Commitment and HIV/AIDS: What’s Next”
was the topic of AFPPD sponsored satellite
session at the 10th International
Congress on AIDS on Asia and the Pacific (ICAAP
10) in Busan, Korea, which was held from 26
to 30 August 2011. This issue was
addressed by Hon. Dr. Pen Pannha, MP, Cambodia,
Hon. Ms. Toshiko Abe, MP, Japan, Hon. Mr. John
Hyde, MP, Australia, and Hon. Moses Manwab, MP,
Papua New Guinea.
Hon. Dr. Jetn Sirathranont,
MP, Thailand and Hon. Mr. Teodoro Casino were
also speakers on “Prioritising Male Sexual
Health in Integrating Sexual Reproductive Health
and HIV Programmes” at the IPPF-AFPPD joint
satellite session. During this session, Hon. Ms.
Toshiko Abe and Hon. Mr. John Hyde also provided
information on how the issues of MSM and
transgendered people have been handled in their
respective countries.
Hon. Mr. John Hyde was also a
speaker at the APA satellite session “Money
Talks: Donor NGO Dialogue on Key Affected Women
and Girls in a Concentrated Pandemic” and the
RBB and ANPUD joint satellite session “Strategic
Solutions or Community Exclusion.”
3. First
Ladies to Attend UN Summit on Maternal Health
and Supply in New York
New York – During 7-8
September 2011, the UN high-level meeting will
take place in New York to discuss successes and
challenges in the area of maternal and
reproductive health commodity security. The
First Lady of Nigeria, Dame Patience Jonathan,
other first ladies, ministers, and development
experts from Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Haiti,
Laos, Madagascar, Mali, Mozambique, Nicaragua,
Niger, and Sierra Leone will participate in the
UN Summit. Representatives from the Netherlands,
the European Community, DFID and USAID will also
attend.
4. Senator
Claire Moore Spoke on Population at 7 Billion
and AFPPD in Australian Parliament
Australia – Hon. Ms.
Claire Moore, Senator of Australia and
Chairwomen of the AFPPD Standing Committee on
Women spoke in the Australian Senate on the
world population at 7 billion and the role of
parliamentarians. This was a follow up from the
APDA Meeting in Colombo, Sri Lanka during 18 to
19 July 2011. She also mentioned about the role
of AFPPD. The full speech can be acquired from

5. Mr.
Melesse is the New Director General of IPPF
London – Mr. Tewodros
Melesse, former regional director of IPPF in
Africa since 2002, is now the new Director
General of the International Planned Parenthood
Federation (IPPF), which is an organization
working to promote the sexual and reproductive
health and rights of all people in 174 countries
around the globe. Mr. Melesse, an Ethiopian
national, has been working in the area of family
planning and reproductive health since 1984. He
worked at US-based reproductive health NGO,
Pathfinder International, and IPPF prior to his
position as the Director of IPPF’s Africa
Region.

Billion Interactive Discussion by the UN on 14
September 2011
New York – The
Secretary General of the United Nations will
host an interactive discussion to commemorate
the launch of the 7 Billion Actions initiative
on 14 September 2011 at the United Nations
Headquaters in New York, the United States of
America. The discussion will be made available
through a live web cast on
http://7billionactions.org. Participant
around the world will be able to send in
questions and comments to be part of the
discussion. Panelists include UN Secretary
General, Mr. Ban Ki-moon, UNFPA Executive
Director, Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin, Youth Leader
from Morocco, Ms. Imane Kachani, New Media
Innovator and Co-Founder of Foursquare, Mr.
Naveen Selvadurai, and Vice chairman of Johnson
& Johnson, Ms. Sheri S. McCoy. The event will be
moderated by Mr. Riz Khan, International
Television Host. |
